Frequently Asked Questions

Now that Adult-Use Cannabis sales are beginning, are there any advantages to being registered with the Medical Marijuana Program?

  • Cost savings
    • Medical marijuana is medication and not subject to sales taxes.
    • Financial assistance is available at many dispensary facilities for those in need.
    • Effective July 1, 2023, the Department will no longer charge qualifying patients or their caregivers a fee to register with the Medical Marijuana Program.
  • More locations
    • Registered qualifying patients and their caregivers have exclusive use of medical marijuana dispensary facilities.
    • They can also buy medical marijuana products at hybrid retailers, where they will have priority entry over Adult-Use Cannabis consumers.
    • In addition, qualifying patients and their caregivers can purchase adult-use cannabis products (subject to applicable taxes and ¼ ounce per transaction) as adult-use consumers from licensed hybrid retailers and retailers.
  • Allowed to carry larger quantities
    • Qualifying patients and their caregivers may carry up to 5 ounces of cannabis flower or its equivalent. Adult-Use Cannabis consumers may only carry up to 1.5 ounces, but may have up to 5 ounces of cannabis in a locked glove box or locked container in their home.
  • Greater variety
    • There are no potency restrictions in the Medical Marijuana Program. Adult-Use Cannabis products are limited to up to 30 percent THC for cannabis flower and up to 60 percent THC for other cannabis products.
    • Medical product options include capsules, tablets, pills, sublinguals and suppositories. These products are not permitted in the Adult-Use Cannabis market.
  • Qualifying patients under 21 years of age
    • Qualifying patients who are 18 years of age and older or who are minors may become certified in the Medical Marijuana Program to purchase medical marijuana products.
    • Only adults aged 21 years and older may purchase cannabis and cannabis products through the Adult-Use Cannabis market.

What is required for your initial appointment at The Green Leaf?

  • Be a legal resident of Connecticut
  • Have at least one of the qualifying medical conditions per CT state laws
  • Provide us with medical records that state your qualifying medical condition (except in the case of PTSD, which could be diagnosed at your initial visit)

I have never been diagnosed with PTSD, is this something that can be done during the consultation?

Yes. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. This traumatic event can be re-experienced in the following ways: unwanted upsetting memories, nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress, physical reactivity, avoidance, isolation, etc. Prior to your consultation you will fill out paperwork with a series of questions regarding your history. The provider will then review the paperwork with you during your consultation and make recommendations for treatment.

I had my consultation, whats next?

  • You will receive an email from the CT Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) confirming that you have been recommended into the Medical Marijuana Program.
  • You will need to create an account so you can  access the online registration system. Go to https://www.biznet.ct.gov/AccountMaint/Login.aspx and click the “Log In/Out” button in the top left corner. Log in to  your account with the email address you supplied at your certification appointment.
  • Verify that the information submitted is accurate and answer a series of  certification questions.
  • Once this is done the wait is up to 4 weeks to receive your card  via email.
  • The certification is good for one year and should be renewed in the 11th month to avoid any lapse in coverage.

. Can an employer decide not to hire someone or decide to fire, or otherwise penalize or threaten that person, solely because the person is qualified to use medical marijuana?

No. An employer, however, may prohibit the use of intoxicating substances during work hours or discipline an employee for being intoxicated while at work.

What are my options if i do not want to smoke or "get high"?

There are many different options for administration other than smoking. There are edibles, sublinguals, tinctures, extracts and topicals that may provide great benefits without smoking. Discussing this with the pharmacists at your chosen dispensary can be very helpful in determining your best options.

How do I choose a dispensary?

Your dispensary should feel welcoming. You should feel supported by a medically knowledgeable staff, feel safe and at ease with discussing your options for treatment. You should not feel rushed, confused or judged. Your dispensary should offer a menu of a wide variety of strains and administration options.
